Maybe the Gholston critics are right

Posted by Andy Hart April 26, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Maybe those who say Vernon Gholston takes games off are right. Based on his look when he was anounced by Deion Sanders at the NFL Draft it looks like he’s taking Draft Day off. He looked like he just rolled out of bed. Geez. It’s supposed to be one of the greatest days of his life and he looks all snoozy on stage.

I’m not saying I’m off Gholston or that I don’t want the Patriots to pick him. But I would like him to show a little more emotion on one of the biggest days of his life. Hey, at least if New England takes him he’ll still get to face Jake Long twice a year.

Kaczur a first-rounder?

Posted by Reiss' Pieces April 10, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Scouts Inc., offers up a re-grading of the 2005 NFL Draft today on ESPN.com, and then takes it one step further and provides a re-draft.

Two areas that caught the eye:

  • 1) The Patriots' grade went from a B-minus three years ago to a B-plus today.

  • 2) In the re-draft, offensive tackle Nick Kaczur was given a first-round grade, and Logan Mankins jumped from the 32nd overall pick to the 7th.

    Patriots 2005 draft

  • First round (32nd overall) -- OL Logan Mankins
  • Second round -- no pick (traded)
  • Third round (84th overall) -- CB Ellis Hobbs
  • Third round (100th overall) -- OL Nick Kaczur
  • Fourth round (133rd overall) -- S James Sanders
  • Fifth round (170th overall) -- LB Ryan Claridge
  • Sixth round -- no pick (traded)
  • Seventh round (230th overall) -- QB Matt Cassel
  • Seventh round (255th overall) -- TE Andy Stokes

Chris Long to Dolphins in mock NFL draft

Posted by Dave Goldberg, AP Football Writer April 8, 2008 at 1:48 pm No one really wants the first pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Not because there aren't good players, but because there's not one great player, the franchise quarterback who can produce a title with one fling of his arm.

    Another try at No. 7

Posted by Reiss' Pieces April 8, 2008 at 9:59 am

With the NFL draft fast approaching (April 26-27), it's time to take another shot at predicting the Patriots' selection at No. 7.

Bengals.com writer Geoff Hobson called yesterday, as he's been polling writers who cover teams picking in front of the Bengals at No. 9. In his mock draft, the top six picks went this way:

  • 1) Dolphins -- OT Jake Long (Michigan)
  • 2) Rams -- DE Chris Long (Virginia)
  • 3) Falcons -- DT Glenn Dorsey (LSU)
  • 4) Raiders -- RB Darren McFadden (Arkansas)
  • 5) Chiefs -- OT Ryan Clady (Boise State)
  • 6) Jets -- OLB Vernon Gholston (Ohio State)

In this scenario, I went with USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis.

My feeling was that the value at cornerback is not there, and that you can never go wrong adding to the defensive line, especially when Richard Seymour (2009), Vince Wilfork (2009) and Jarvis Green (2009) have contracts that expire in two seasons. This would allow a player like Ellis to develop slowly, with limited expectations, and then possibly emerge at a difficult position (nose tackle) in 2009. It would also create more flexibility within the Patriots' defensive front.

For those keeping track, I have now picked different players in each mock draft in which I've participated. Past choices included Kansas CB Aqib Talib, Ohio State OLB Vernon Gholston and Florida OLB Derrick Harvey. I figure one of these times, I might actually get it right.
