Would You Make This Deal?

Posted by Mike Giardi November 30, 2008 at 4:06 pm

I put this out to you, members of Red Sox Nation. If you could acquire Dodgers catcher Russell Martin for Kevin Youkilis, straight up, would you do it? Keep in mind, Martin will be 25 years old in February, while Youk turns 30 in March. The Sox need a backstop, and LA could use a third baseman to replace free agent Casey Blake. Discuss…

Yes you do it and you do it because it is nearly impossible to find a good catcher where as a good first baseman is a bit easier to find. Not to mention the market out there has a good first baseman already in it. Now i know your colleague Mister Hart will disagree because he dislikes the ” Singles hitting stirkeout machine” but you improve a weak position while not going down at another position. The problem is that i doubt the dodgers would make the trade. Think about how many teams out there need a catcher and how many prospect they could get in return. I understand that in Red Sox nation we consider Youk’s value to be high because we know what he is and what he can bring, but surely a top tier catcher can bring more then just a first baseman even if he is the best first baseman in the american league.

Okay, would you then consider adding a pitching prospect into the mix? Maybe not a Masterson per say, but someone like Daniel Bard, who lit up Portland this summer?

Just to clarify, it’s “singles machine”… Teixeira has strikeout numbers similar to those of Manny Ramirez, who, as we all know, is my gold standard for hitters. And he only qualifies as a “singles machine”, because all 7 of his hits in the ALDS against the Red Sox were singles. But, as John Lackey will tell you, the Angels were the better team…

Got something to say?
