Seattle is More Than Just Pearl Jam and Starbucks…

The rainy city is also home to a bad baseball team. Thank heavens for the Seattle Mariners. That team has packed up shop and headed home, even though the end of the season won’t be here for more than two months. You want proof that they already put the stamp on the letter? Dice-K got through 7.1 innings last night, throwing just 99 pitches. If I’m Seattle’s brass, I’m trading everybody. And I do mean, everybody. By the way, what Lester did Monday and Dice did yesterday (even with help) is exactly how you deal with a bumbling bullpen - by not using them.
Our sports director, one Morry Levine, just posted a blog entry about how the Colorado Rockies reportedly asked the Sox for Clay Buchholz. No, not in some mega-deal involving Matt Holliday, but rather reliver Brian Fuentes. Now I know I got all emotional yesterday regarding the state of the Sox pen, but that might be the dumbest deal in the history of dumb deals. Fuentes is not a stiff in the Heathcliff Slocumb sense, but he’s not the next coming of Mariano Rivera, John Wetteland or even Scott Williamson. I wouldn’t give up a top prospect to get him. Maybe Coco, but not Buchholz.
If you haven’t seen the WNBA brawl last night, it wasn’t quite Artest at the Palace, but it was pretty wild. The WNBA has got to be thrilled that its newest and possibly biggest star, Candace Parker, would be in the middle of something like that. Detroit Assistant Coach Rick Mahorn was involved, and one of the players actually had to be taken off on a wheelchair after getting mixed up with McFilthy (or was it McNasty?). Said Mahorn, “I was trying to protect the whole game, the integrity of the game. The WNBA is very special to me because I have four daughters. I don’t even raise my hand to them, and I would never push a woman. This game, I love this game too much.” Anyway, file it under headlines the WNBA doesn’t want to be getting, but also credit them for inspiring me to search for some great Johnny Most clips, which can be found here, here and and here.
