Pierce Finally Has His Night

Nine years of futility erased. Yes, futility can be defined as making the playoffs with Antoine Walker as your wingman. Or Rick Pitino ranting down memory lane. But now, banner No. 17 has been raised.

And it wasn’t just a banner that was raised. It was that final cloud of uncertainty concerning the careers of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen which was ceremonially lifted. But don’t include James Posey in that group. There was never any doubt that he’s a winner. He wins championships like some sort of carnival trickster.

The ceremony was what any Celtics fan expected. Pierce and Garnett are known for wearing their emotions on their sleeves, but this time it was Pierce who wore those emotions on his face — in the form of tears streaming down his cheeks. Tears of joy. Not some sort of sissy tears stemming from a broken heart or leg. These were man tears.

Mike Giardi takes us into the glass case of emotion which was the TD Banknorth Garden on Tuesday night:

Now it’s time to get to work on No. 18. There is a running blog on the action from last night. The Celts beat King James 90-85. Fittingly, Pierce outscored BronBron by five points — the margin of victory.
