Wes Welker back at practice
Posted by Reiss' Pieces August 31, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Wide receiver Wes Welker, who was knocked out of the Patriots' third preseason game with a rib injury, returned to practice today.
Welker was present for the media-access portion of the practice, which included stretching, agility drills and some light pass-catching.
The practice was held in shorts and shells (light shoulder pads).
Players not spotted at the media-access portion of practice included:
With only six offensive linemen present -- and with Connolly and Hochstein possibly not ready for the opener -- the Patriots might need to make a move for another offensive lineman.
Patriots cut veteran safety John Lynch

No deal expected
Posted by Extra Bases August 31, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Sox general manager Theo Epstein didn't expect a deal to take place today, the (playoff) roster deadline. While there are teams trying to make deals - the Diamondbacks and Angels are reportedly interested in Toronto shortstop David Eckstein or Giants veteran Omar Vizquel - the Sox appear content with their roster even with Sean Casey and J.D. Drew on the DL.
The Sox were trailing the White Sox 3-1 in the seventh. Thought we might have our first instant replay in the fifth when Jim Thome's drive to left field toward the foul pole, fell just under it. Nobody had a beef with the call as Thome settled for a double. He was driven in by Paul Konerko's double to left field.
John Lynch follow-up

ANALYSIS
The Patriots announced today that they released veteran safety John Lynch, and in the press release, included comments from both coach Bill Belichick and Lynch.
The comments, especially from Lynch, make it sound as if the move might not be permanent.
"I have no regrets about my time thus far with the Patriots," said Lynch. "The immense respect that I've long held for the organization has been only heightened over the past couple of weeks. I am going to keep all options open and look forward with excitement to see what the future brings."
The "thus far" part of Lynch's comment seems to indicate this could be a situation where Lynch is not kept on the Patriots' roster for the opening week -- when salaries for veterans would be guaranteed -- before returning to the club after the first game.
Head coach Bill Belichick also included a comment in the team's release:
"It goes without saying but John is an all-time great safety, one of the league's classiest professionals and his elite play speaks for itself," said Belichick. "As has been the case in other situations, I would not rule anything out down the road."

Pedroia finally out
Posted by Extra Bases August 31, 2008 at 3:30 pm
After reaching base 11 straight times after a bloop single in the first inning, Dustin Pedroia was retired on a tapper back to the mound in the third inning.
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen called for the ball that Pedroia was retired with and then kiddingly gestured to Pedroia to sign the ball for him. Guillen called Pedroia a "jockey" after Saturday's game after Pedroia had four hits batting clean-up and then was walked intentionally by Guillen.
Guillen, a big fan of Pedroia's, then put the ball in his back pocket and kept pointing to the ball for Pedroia to sign as Pedropia took his position. Later, Guillen gave the ball to a small child sitting next to the White Sox dugout.
The White Sox lead 2-0 in the fourth after Jim Thome's first-inning homer against Tim Wakefield.

Illnesses leave Sox shorthanded
Posted by Ian Browne August 31, 2008 at 2:30 pm The fact that Dustin Pedroia batted cleanup on Sunday for the second day in a row could only mean one thing: Kevin Youkilis is still sick.
