The Boston Celtics were winning WORLD Championships since before Gregg Popovich was born. No, that’s not true. But they’ve been doing it since before he turned 7. So why’s he got to get all preachy? Read more

Nine years of futility erased. Yes, futility can be defined as making the playoffs with Antoine Walker as your wingman. Or Rick Pitino ranting down memory lane. But now, banner No. 17 has been raised. Read more

It All Starts Now

Tonight promises to be a special one here at the Garden. The Celtics will get their rings and raise banner number 17. I just saw Paul Pierce come off the floor with a smile that rivaled what came across his face when he held the Larry O’Brien Trophy on this same floor only 4 months ago. I was genuinely happy for him then, and will be again this evening.
Okay, now I have a confession: I’m not a big fan of these celebrations. In my experience, they’re usually too drawn out and too coreographed. I much prefer the moments right after the clincher is over. That unabashed joy is one of the big reasons I love sports. Nothing like completing the journey in style.
Anyway, once this game is over and the questions are asked, its time to put 2007-08 in the rearview. Despite many of the same faces, this “team” is different, the pressure is different and the psychology of defending is far more challenging. Is this team good enough to handle it? To succeed? We’re about to find out.
Can the Celtics Repeat?
Posted by Chris Collins October 27, 2008 at 11:40 am
The only thing that maybe tougher than winning a championship is repeating as champion. We saw that first hand this year with the Red Sox and now it’s the Celtics turn. Can they do it? Yes. Will they do it? Hmmm, that remains up for debate.
The Problem that always happens in this day an age of pro sports is always first - can they keep the team together? Well, Danny Ainge has done a pretty good job at that. Sure with two pretty good losses in James Posey (who probably didn’t get enough credit not just for his timely threes, but the way he could help lock down the Kobe’s and Lebrons of the world) and P.J.Brown (who signed late and played big in the post season). Now with those two losses, they don’t help, but they can be overcome.
But the real opposition will be as it always is with the big three. Still in tact, can they stay healthy? I’m not even going to go there with hungry. KG just always seems to be starving, but must stay healthy if they want a real good shot at going back to back in the NBA. As a matter of fact, except for one year (1999), there were repeat NBA champions consistently from 1988-2002. It has been done before and can certainly can be done again.

Celtics Miles Suspended 10 Games
Posted by Morry Levine September 19, 2008 at 4:44 pm
The NBA announced today that Darius Miles has been suspended without pay for 10 games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program at the end of the 2007-08 NBA season. His violation of the program involved phentermine. Miles’ suspension will begin with the first game of the 2008-09 NBA regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play.
Celtics Extend Rivers
Posted by Morry Levine September 10, 2008 at 10:26 am
The Boston Celtics announced today that they have extended the contract of Head Coach Doc Rivers.
“We are pleased to be able to extend Doc’s contract. Doc molded a championship team last season through his leadership and we are confident that he is the man to lead this franchise on the court now and in the future.” said Danny Ainge, Celtics Executive Director of Basketball Operations/General Manager.
Rivers led the Celtics to their NBA-record 17th NBA Championship while leading the Celtics to an NBA-record 42 game turnaround. Rivers became the first Celtics coach in NBA history to have been honored as the NBA’s Coach of the Month three times in the same season during the 2007-08 campaign. Rivers led the Celtics to their third highest record in franchise history during the 2007-08 season when the team was an NBA-best 66-16. Rivers joins Auerbach, Heinsohn, Jones, Fitch and Bill Russell as Celtics coaches to have led their team to an NBA Championship.
