Barkley arrested on suspicion of DUI

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Charles Barkley has been arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving.
Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler says an officer with a task force that targets drunken drivers saw the former NBA star run a stop sign around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in Scottsdale.
Shuhandler says Barkley declined to submit to a breath test but was given a blood test. The results have not come in.
After Barkley was processed, he was cited and released. Shuhandler says Barkley left the scene in a cab.
Savard leads Bruins to 9th straight win

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Marc Savard scored a power-play goal, then set up Boston's next two goals with excellent playmaking, and the streaking Bruins ran their longest winning streak in nearly 26 years to nine games by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 Tuesday night.
Savard had his usual big game against Pittsburgh, and Dennis Wideman had a goal and two assists as the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins improved to 23-2-1 in their last 26 games, outscoring opponents 106-51.

(NECN) - Week 1 of the NFL season -- every football fan in New England would have told you that the Patriots stood no chance of making the playoffs. But did anyone listen? No. Maybe the numbers 3,615, 63.2 and 21 had something to do with it. Those were Matt Cassel's passing yardage, completion percentage and touchdown passes in the 2008 season, respectively.
Drunk Zamboni driver gets iced

(NECN/WMTW) - 22-year-old Adam Patterson of Portland, Maine faces a drunken driving charge after police found him aboard an idling Zamboni inside the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Police were alerted by an alarm at about 2 a.m. Tuesday that somebody was inside the arena. The arena is home to the Portland Pirates hockey team.
Police officers discovered Patterson attempting to operate the Zamboni, which had crashed into a wall inside the civic center's storage area.

NEW YORK (AP) - Matt Ryan is more than the face of the sensational turnaround by the Atlanta Falcons. He also is the best member of a superb rookie crop, earning The Associated Press 2008 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award Tuesday.
The quarterback from Boston College, selected third overall in April's draft, was a landslide winner in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Ryan became the third quarterback in five years to win the award; before that, no QB ever took the honor.

No. 11 Georgetown beats No. 2 Connecticut 74-63

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - DaJuan Summers scored 18 points and No. 11 Georgetown won the first of many matchups between ranked Big East teams this season, beating No. 2 Connecticut 74-63 on Monday night for its seventh straight win.
Chris Wright and freshman Greg Monroe both had 16 points for Georgetown (10-1, 1-0), and Austin Freeman added 13.
A.J. Price had 16 points and Jeff Adrien added 15 for the Huskies (11-1, 0-1), who cut a 12-point deficit early in the second half to three twice but couldn't get any closer.
Belichick: Everybody involved should be proud

(NECN) - Patriots coach Bill Belichick held a season ending press conference Monday morning at Gillette Stadium. Although the team fell short of the playoffs, he was positive. "Everybody that participated in this 11-5 season has something to be proud of... The players the coaches, the organization, the scouts."
Belichick says he and the staff feel good about what they were able to accomplish this year, and it is a credit to those who worked hard the entire season.
Collins praises Patriots, Belichick

(NECN: Chris Collins) - The New England Patriots did everything they could to secure a playoff spot, but it still wasn't enough this year. The Pats beat the Bills 13-0 yesterday to finish the regular season at 11-5, but they needed either the Dolphins or the Ravens to lose -- and neither team complied.
The Patriots are out of the playoffs for the first time in six years. The Pats are the first 11-5 team to miss the playoffs since 1985.
Faceoff: Cassel or Brady in 2009?

(NECN) - The Patriots will have a much longer offseason than what they are used to. The front office will need the extra time to think about all the decisions they have to make including what to do at the quarterback position.
It is a scary thought, but what if Tom Brady can't play again in 2009. Reports Sunday indicated the possibility that Brady's recovery is behind schedule.
