CLEVELAND (AP) - New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has interviewed with Browns owner Randy Lerner about Cleveland's coaching vacancy on Friday.
The Ohio born and bred McDaniels just completed his third season overseeing the Patriots' offense and coaching quarterbacks. The 32-year-old former college quarterback was credited with transforming backup Matt Cassel into an effective starter after Tom Brady was lost for the season after injuring his knee in the opener.

(NECN) - There is nothing like a New Year's Day practice, full of some Boston Celtics intensity, to put a (1-3) road trip in the rear view mirror.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers put the Green Team through an uptempo workout to start 2009, getting the team back to its roots after that rough West Coast swing that yielded just one win.
"You lose a couple games, you can tell you kind of get that fight back into you," center Kendrick Perkins said. "I just think we need to get back to that intense Celtics basketball, high energy level and the defensive team that we are."
Peyton Manning named NFL’s MVP

NEW YORK (AP) - Peyton Manning has joined Brett Favre as the only three-time winners of The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award.
The Indianapolis Colts quarterback was a landslide winner Friday in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL. Manning also was the league MVP in 2003, when he shared it with Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair, and in 2004.
Favre, then with Green Bay, took MVP honors in 1995 and '96 before sharing it with Detroit running back Barry Sanders in 1997.
USC’s Sanchez dominant in Rose Bowl

(NECN/ABC) - Quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns in USC's 38-24 victory over No. 6 Penn State in Thursday's Rose Bowl.
USC's defense dominated much of the game, as the Trojans led 31-7 at halftime. It was the most points USC had scored in the first half of any of the school's 33 Rose Bowl games.
The Nittany Lions scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, at least making the final score respectable in the box score.
Pelini wins bowl in first season as coach

(NECN/CBS) - Joe Ganz threw for two touchdowns, Alex Henery kicked four field goals and Nebraska beat Clemson 26-21 in the Gator Bowl on Thursday.
Nebraska (9-4) ended the season with a four-game winning streak, including a victory against rival Colorado, won six of its final seven games and had success in a January bowl game for the first time in nine years.
Stafford MVP in Georgia’s bowl win

(NECN/ESPN) - It was a rough first half for Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, completing just 6-of-14 pass attempts and tossing an interception.
The second half was a different story. Stafford went 14-of-17 and connected on three touchdown passes, leading the Bulldogs to a 24-12 win over Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl.
A junior, Stafford is said to be coveted by NFL teams as the next big quarterback to come from the college ranks.
Greene entering Draft after Outback win

(NECN/ESPN) - After a leading the Iowa Hawkeyes to a lopsided 31-10 victory over South Carolina in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day, All-American running back Shonn Greene announced that he will enter the 2009 NFL Draft.
"Basically it was my performance this season. A hundred yards every game, and this last game -- against a SEC team, great defense and all that -- I don't think there's really a lot more I can do here," Greene said. "I think I pretty much did my damage on the college level."
Bruins extend winning streak to 10

BOSTON (AP) - Manny Fernandez made 30 saves to remain perfect at home and the Boston Bruins extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.
Fernandez improved to 9-0-0 at home. Boston has only two regulation losses since Oct. 30 and its winning streak is its longest since March 9-28, 1973.
With the home-and-home sweep over the Penguins, the Bruins also moved into the top spot in the NHL with 62 points, one more than idle San Jose.

Suitors knocking on Pioli’s door

(NECN) - The New England Patriots could lose Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli, who helped put together the three championship teams.
The Cleveland Browns have received permission to speak with Pioli, and the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly asked for the to talk with him, as well.
But it might not be only Pioli who could be on his way out. Browns owner Randy Lerner said Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is on his list of candidates to succeed recently fired head coach Romeo Crennel.
Vanderbilt snaps BC bowl wining streak

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vanderbilt won a bowl game for the first time in exactly 53 years when Bryant Hahnfeldt kicked a 45-yard field goal with 3:26 left to beat Boston College 16-14 Wednesday in the Music City Bowl.
Vanderbilt hadn't even played in a bowl since 1982 and the win gave the Commodores (7-6) their first winning season since then, too.
Boston College (9-5) snapped the nation's longest bowl winning streak after eight straight games in its 10th consecutive bowl appearance. The Eagles also missed a chance at finishing with at
