Posted by NECN - Sports January 4, 2009 (2 days ago) at 10:40 pm

(NECN) - Mike Giardi welcomes Rob Bradford of WEEI.com into the NECN studio for some Hot Stove talk of the baseball variety.

And while baseball is the main focus of the discussion, it's so hard to keep the country's struggling economy out of the conversation. The Boston Red Sox have made some minor additions this offseason compared to the signings made by the New York Yankees -- CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Teixiera.

With just two seconds remaining in the game, Newton North trailed by two points. Senior Hallie Vitagliano launched a half court prayer as time expired.

The shot went in, and she was mobbed on the floor by her teammates. The shot lifted Newton North to a 47-46 win.

The even was presented by the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, which benefits from the proceeds of the event.

Bruins players signed autographs, took pictures for and played video games with fans.

And with the Bruins playing much better than in years past, the wives hope this year's event is more profitable.

Is McDaniels ready to be a head coach?

Posted by NECN - Sports January 4, 2009 (2 days ago) at 3:37 pm

(NECN) - Mike Giardi welcomes former Patriots offensive lineman Pete Brock into the NECN studio to talk about New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who has been a target of teams with head coaching vacancies.

But is McDaniels ready for the job? Looking back at Eric Mangini's short stint as a defensive coordinator with the Patriots, it can be used as a comparison with that of McDaniels. Maybe he needs a bit more seasoning before taking the reigns of an organization that is in the pits.

Watch the interview in the video player above.

Brock: Franchise tag a ‘huge disservice’

Posted by NECN - Sports January 4, 2009 (2 days ago) at 3:07 pm

(NECN) - Mike Giardi welcomes former Patriots offensive lineman Pete Brock into the NECN studio out of habit, if anything else. With New England's season in the can, the discussion turns to offseason moves -- such as what to do with free agent quarterback Matt Cassel.

"I think they'd be doing him a huge disservice if they franchised him, kept him on this team and Brady comes in and plays," Brock said. "He took it upon himself to better himself to get ready to play the sport."

UConn wins bowl, Brown NFL bound

Posted by NECN - Sports January 3, 2009 (3 days ago) at 7:02 pm

(NECN/ESPN) - Connecticut's star running back Donald Brown had little to prove at the college level, and it showed on Saturday.

Brown rushed for a career-high 261 yards against Buffalo in the International Bowl -- 208 of those yards coming in the first half.

After becoming the 14th player in major college history to run for 2,000 yards in a season, the junior running back broke the bad news to UConn fans -- he will forego his final season at UConn.

"OK, tell them, bud," coach Randy Edsall said, slapping Brown on the back at the postgame interview table.

(NECN) - According to conflicting reports, Boston College head football coach Jeff Jagodzinski may or may not be set to interview for the vacant head coaching position with the New York Jets.

The New York and New Jersey media have reported that Coach Jags is scheduled to interview for Eric Mangini's old post in the coming week.

The problem with that? Jagodzinski and BC Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo said on Saturday that there has been zero contact with the Jets.
